The John Middleton Story


1856

Founded as a tobacco shop in downtown Philadelphia, PA.

Early 1900s

Beginning in the early 1900s, retail operations and national presence are developed.

1958

John Middleton withdraws from retail operations to focus on manufacturing and selling its own tobacco products.

1960

The King of Prussia facility opens, ending manufacturing operations in Philadelphia.

1968

John Middleton launches its first cigar made of pipe tobacco.

1978

Black & Mild Pipe Tobacco launches.

1980

Black & Mild Pipe-Tobacco Cigars launches.

1985

Completes acquisition of select competitive pipe tobacco brands from General Cigar Brands.

1987

Completes acquisition of select competitive pipe tobacco brands from RJ Reynolds.

1998

John Middleton expands into Limerick, PA manufacturing facility.

2002

The first Black & Mild line extension, Black & Mild Mild launches.

2004

Black & Mild Fast Break launches.

2006

Black & Mild Filter Tip launches.

2007

Altria Group completed its acquisition of John Middleton from privately held Bradford Holdings, Inc.
